Digital Addiction & Purity
A Short Bible Study for Men Seeking Freedom in Christ
(www.mensgroup.org – “Original Study”)
PRAY: A suggested opening prayer for small group members or individuals to invite God to connect as we seek Him in his Word. Feel free to add your own words, “in prayer.”
Heavenly Father, we come before You as men who want to honor You with our eyes, minds, and bodies. We confess that the digital world tempts us, but we know Your Word is living and active. Open our hearts to Your truth today. Help us flee temptation, renew our minds, and live in the purity and freedom Jesus purchased for us. In His name, Amen.
INTRODUCTION
In today’s world, the battle for purity is fought on screens. Endless scrolling, gaming, pornography and AI-generated content pull at our eyes, minds, and hearts. The Bible doesn’t mention “digital addiction,” but it speaks clearly to lust, the mind, purity, and victory over sin. This short study will help you identify the traps, guard your heart, and walk in the freedom Christ has already won for us.
KEY SCRIPTURES
Proverbs 4:23 NIV: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
Remember to guard your heart and your mind first — that’s where everything begins.
Timothy 2:22 NIV: "Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart."
Temptation often starts subtly. Temptation itself is not sin — but we need to run, not walk, away from it.
1 John 1:9 NIV: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness".
God promises to forgive and cleanse us when we honestly confess our sins.
Romans 12:12 NIV: “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer."
We can’t live a pure life by ourselves, we need help. This verse stresses the foundation of Christian attitudes — joy rooted in hope, patience through hard seasons, and constant prayer — that help us to endure during difficult times and remain faithful.
Job 31:1 NIV: "I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a young woman."
This verse tells us of his commitment to purity and self-control to resist temptation.
Matthew 5:28 NIV: "But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart."
This verse is part of the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus taught that sin begins in the heart and eyes, not just in actions.
I watched pornography in my mid-forties — almost four decades ago. Sadly, I understand the pull it has and the havoc it can cause in our lives and in our families. My hope and prayer is that this study will help you live a pure life, including breaking free if pornography is part of your struggle.
THE HEART OF THE PROBLEM
As we have just read, Jesus raised the standard. Sin begins in the heart and eyes, not just in our actions. Today, screens deliver temptation straight to us — porn, social media, ads, and AI-generated content. The battle is real, but so is “God’s power to overcome it.”
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS (for individuals or small groups)
1. What does Jesus mean when He says lust in the heart is adultery? How does that change the way we view digital temptation?
2. What are the main digital sources of temptation for you right now (scrolling, gaming, porn, AI content, etc.)? Be honest — how often do they pull you in?
3. Job made a covenant with his eyes. What would a modern “covenant” look like for you (e.g., filters, time limits, accountability partner)?
4. Why do you think many men hide this struggle? What fears keep us silent?
5. Share one small, practical step you could take this week to guard your eyes and heart.
6. How does knowing Christ sees everything — including our hearts (Hebrews 4:13) — bring both conviction and hope?
CLOSING CHALLENGE
This week, identify your biggest digital trigger and take one concrete step to limit or block it (for example: set an app timer, find an accountability partner, or keep your phone in another room at night). Pray daily for strength.
CLOSING PRAYER
“Lord, give me courage to guard my heart and eyes this week. Help me flee temptation and run to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
